Why are we doing a Fundraiser for Marion Island?

Marion Island Fundraiser Project

Why should you contribute to the Mouse-Free Marion Island Fundraiser Project?  That is a valid question, and we will be telling you all about it.

A bit of background

When my husband first approached me about embarking on a pelagic tour, my initial thought was: “No thank you. I don’t do ships and oceans together.” I know some of you might wonder exactly what a pelagic tour is. The best way for me to describe it is, envision yourself going on a safari, except you will be traveling on the ocean instead of land. A pelagic tour is a unique experience because it allows you to experience the beauty of the ocean wildlife first hand.

More Information About Mouse-Free Marion Fundraiser Project

Once my husband told me where we will be going and the reason behind it, I became more excited about the project. People who know me well, are cognizant that I am eternally on board when it comes to serving those in trouble, especially any projects linking to animals and nature. If you read more about the predicament of the birds on Marion Island, you would understand why I immediately decided to get involved and see how I can offer my help.

My first step was to join the Facebook group for the “Birders going on the Flock to Marion.” Next, I posted a question to help me understand which part of the cost (if any) as a pelagic voyager will be contributed towards helping these birds that suffer a gruesome, cruel, and slow death.

Understandably, Birdlife South Africa/Birdlife Africa needs funds to sustain a business model and the conservation of birdlife as a whole.

As it turns out, none of the funds will be going directly to the “Mouse-Free Marion” campaign.

The Mouse-Free Marion Project

After doing some research, I found a website that is dedicated to donating funds towards the Mouse-Free Marion Project which is an initiative of Birdlife South Africa. They have recently appointed a Project Manager, Mr. Anton Wolfaardt and we have contacted him to let him know that we are planning a fundraiser for this project.

The Sponsors & Patrons

For us to raise as much funding as possible, we got in contact with several sponsors who we knew would be willing to support this cause wholeheartedly. We quickly managed to collect over R70000.00 worth of sponsored prizes which will be handed to the winners once we meet them on the ship.

Needless to say, the patrons were incredibly excited to hear about our plans and gave us the go-ahead of their committed support for this project without hesitation.

A Special thanks to the Sponsors and Patrons for Helping us Make This Worthy Project a Reality:

LEICA, SEABIRDS, BUSHNELL, PELICAN, LITTLE CARTHAGE RIVER LODGE, FAANSIE PEACOCK, ORMS PHOTOBOOKS, CAPE UNION MART, TUDORTECH, LYNX, TREVOR HARDAKER WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER, PETER HARRISON, DR. SAUMYA TIWARI GAUTAM (Mrs. India-South Africa)

How Can You Contribute Towards the Marion Island Fundraiser Project?

We created a special fund for the people (voyagers) who will be joining us on the Flock to Marion Island pelagic tour in 2022.

The reason why we started this Fundraiser, is so that we can create a fund that we will hand over to Mr. Anton Wolfaardt, from all the people who have committed and invested to go on the Flock to Marion cruise.

Watch how it was done

Follow this eradication team as they embark on a world-leading conservation effort.

What Will the Fund Be Called?

The fund will be called The Mouse-Free Marion 2022 Honorary Voyager Fund.

Where Will the Funds be Distributed?

The Ticket Sales will go directly into an account that we opened especially for this project. We contacted Birdlife South Africa, but they were unable to give us access to their account.

Once the Lucky Draw has ended, we will hand the funds over to Mr. Anton Wolfaardt and his Project Team as a combined donation and allocated towards covering funding needed for the Thirty Thousand hectares.

We would like to invite everyone, even if you are not going on the 'Flock to Marion', to please consider contributing and helping towards this desperate situation. The sooner we can get the funding secured, the sooner the fundraising project can be concluded.

Thank you to all those who are already supporting us with this Marion Island Fundraiser project, and we look forward to meeting you all on the Flock to Marion in 2022.

Secret Cederberg Exposed

Cederberg Wilderness Area, Mount Ceder (#SecretCederberg) | April 2021

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic in April 2020, South Africa was in lockdown; we had no choice but to postpone our Cederberg adventure. It is hard to believe how one year has passed so quickly, fast forward to 2021. We visited the rugged mountainous wilderness and soaked up the silence and solitude that this vast area offers.

(We chose Mount Ceder as our base for this adventure, we were not disappointed)

Having never explored the southern section in the Cederberg, we decided to book our holiday at Mount Ceder. Travelling via Worcester and then taking the Ceres route, we pushed on through to Oppie Berg, and finally, we entered at the Cederberg's southern section.

Ten years earlier, having taken this route,  how pleasant it was to have a different perspective via this unfamiliar route. Not much has changed, dry, dusty, corrugated roads, vast picturesque Landscape and the never-ending twisted roads that traverse one mountain pass after the next. It's no wonder it took some time to cover the forty-odd kilometres of dirt road to Mount Ceder, enjoying the scenery and unique topography. With postcard images on every corner, it was difficult not to stop and admire the dominating sandstone rock formations and breathtaking Panoramas.

Located along the Grootrivier(Big river), with the imposing Blinkberg mountain to the south and the vast Cederberg wilderness to the north, we were finally in our happy place.

Our Shepards cottage with limited power, isolated and peaceful it was perfect. Little did we know that we could appreciate ancient Rock Art within walking distance of our accommodation. It was a privilege to explore your surroundings and discover such treasures; how blessed we were to savour these national treasures.

(Cathedral of light, the main arch within the Wolfberg Cracks, a sight to behold)

The wolfberg Cracks, rated as one of the top ten hikes in South Africa, would be our first challenge on this trip. Lunch stop in the cracks and some time to capture the splendour of this immense cathedral. We feasted on the remarkable cavern within the wolfberg and took a slow descent back to our vehicle. Yet another new rock art site awaited us at the bottom of this climb, marvelling at the delicate imagery that these hunter-gatherers shared.

As we approached the exit, the Vally of The Red Gods was another memorable distraction. Walking amongst these colossal Red Gods, savouring the experience, we departed, passing Kromrivier and on to Mount Ceder.

Some late afternoon birding produced some unique birds, happy to tick off a few new birds, extending my life list. That evening, a dramatic Sunset unfolded, wind-still and warm; we experimented with some celestial images, hoping to portray the dramatic Milkyway. The silence was captivating, shrouded by bright star-studded skies; this is the magic of the Cederberg.

#SecretCederberg was as mysterious as its name suggests, excited at discovering new uncharted landscapes, a planned excursion hosted by Mount Ceder. We were in for a treat, one of the largest canyons in the Western Cape; the Rietrevier canyon viewpoint was breathtaking. Elaborate marble coloured rock formation, early rock art site with polychrome eland paintings had us in awe. As the sun began to fade away in the east, the skies glowed with orange and yellow hues. We had completely forgotten that this was a sundowner experience, so what a joy when we made our final stop just beyond an imposing sandstone arch.

Some local brew to help set the tone and mood, enjoying some snacks,  watching as the sun slowly slipped away. On the way back to camp, we looked for nightjars and owls but no luck, content with the visual overload, it was another adventure-filled day.
